It’s that time of year - bug season! Here in the mountains of New Hampshire we get lots of bugs. When bug spray is forgotten or wears off, you have to do something about that itch!

I like to use my Itch-Be-Gone recipe for rashes and certain bug bites, but sometimes you just need to take out the big guns, and that is why I have this roller bottle on my counter all summer for easy access.

This is the recipe I have been using for years on my family (even on my kids). It really does work. We have used this on mosquito bites as well as bee stings. Just last night, my husband was woken out of a deep sleep by an intense itching on his palm. We are not sure what bit him, but he has a really big, raised red spot. He rolled this right on, and soon the itch was gone. My husband commented this morning about the effectiveness of this blend, which prompted me to finally get my recipe out here once and for all (I’ve shared it on our Facebook group in the past).

Lea’s Bug Bite SootherIn a roller bottle* combine the following (I just eyeball it):

  • 25% Tea Tree essential oil
  • 25% Lavender essential oil
  • 50% carrier oil (Read: What Carriers to Use for some ideas)

To use, just apply where needed, as often as needed (but this works pretty well, so you shouldn’t need to apply very often).

I have also successfully made this with 50% Tea Tree and 50% carrier oil (no Lavender EO).

*No, you don’t need to use a roller bottle, but this is what I use. You can combine in a squeeze-top lotion bottle if you wish.

NOTE: This is a high dilution (50%), but you are applying just a wee bit to the surface of the skin. Because bug bites/itching is very bothersome, this high dilution is acceptable. Many reliable sources allow for “neat” (undiluted) use of Tea Tree or Lavender for bug bites, but I find this dilution to work very well for these mountain mosquitoes. So well, in fact, that just after you apply it, the itching is gone - never to return! That said, if a lower dilution works well for you, go for it!
